 Five years ago the Enron scandal caused over 6000 people to be let go and Darnell Smith was one of those unfortunate ones. This lead to divorce, loss of home and cars and after a few temporary positions, more lay-offs.  Darnell wound up living with friends,  homeless and no transportation. This might have been the best thing to happen to him in hindsight,  since it was this desperation that sparked an idea that would lead to hundreds and possibly thousands of people to never have to work again for someone else.

One day in 2006, Mr. Smith was waiting in a barbershop to get a haircut and noticed that the people there had their eyes fixed on a television with no sound. He also noticed that even though there were books and magazines to read, no one was interested in anything but the TV. Darnell thought to himself, (If my resume was on the TV, I bet I could find a good job);. This one thought stuck with him all day and throughout that week. Sometime between that thought and driving his borrowed car to a job interview that he did not get, he saw several large outdoor Digital Billboard Signs. He remembered seeing them at the malls and in gas stations but knew they cost a ton of money to own, operate and advertise on.  What happened next was the spark to genius and Darnell had no clue it would be this big.
That same day after the interview Darnell decided that he would invent a way that all people rich or poor would be able to advertise and get the recognition they wanted on digital signs,  just like the big boys - at a very low price they could afford. With the use of scrap computer parts, some wood and his own extensive knowledge of computers and software programming, he created the first A to Z Mini Electronic Billboard system designed for the community. He tested his first model in real places like barbershops and beauty salons as he worked out the hardware and software kinks and perfected the system. For two years this testing went on and revisions to the system were made taking the 45 lb. wooden mammoth unit to a sleek LCD HI-DEF Digital Billboard System. Now Darnell had a great working product but no real way to market it unless he went to banks or corporate America (which he had no trust in) to get it off the ground. After being a slave to the system Darnell did not want to go down this path,  instead he choose  to design a business model that would power itself from the people in the community. 
 He took the simple principle of giving back to your community with a fail proof structure to fund the business, has zero overhead and makes all the people involved earn massive wealth in the process. Basically Darnell made it so everyday people could purchase his system at cost and start their own businesses using his technology in the same way that a utility company operates. These investors get a readymade business in a box, states Darnell.  The process is simple. They would take his mini billboard system and mount it in a public place and start selling ads immediately  for a low $25 a month. A to Z Mini Billboards) provides all the hosting for the ads,  like a webpage,  and charges only 30% per ad sold,  giving 70% of the profits back to each investor of the system. Based on the amount of ads sold, this can equate to a profit as high as $17,500 a month (per system)  given back to the people who invested in them.
His business model provides a way to sponsor Amber Alerts, Weather Alerts, PSA and other community positive information for FREE throughout the networks The clients that pay for ads are extremely happy they can advertise in targeted places with highly effective full color digital billboards for less than it cost for newspaper, television, Radio and more.

 Since the writing of this article Darnell's network of Mini Billboard Systems are running in 7 states and 4 countries including Africa. This reach has even sparked the interest of the White House, with a call from David Axelrod, from the Obama’s Administration to further promote the Health Care Reform.
